Thomas asks…

Does anyone have any gardening tips?

I have a small garden in my back yard, I live in MI, and we probably want to do sunflowers and cosmos and we are trying to find a vegetable that will grow well. We have tried carrots and corn and they don’t seem to grow well and we don’t want to do cucumbers. Also any other general tips for gardening?? Thanks!!
We tried lettuce too and that didn’t turn out to well either!!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Run, don’t walk, to your nearest library. There are loads of good books for beginning gardeners. I am from England now living in southern Ontario, Canada so I am not familiar with your climate and, therefore, unwilling to get into specifics about particular flowers and plants.

The one thing I would stress is that you MUST have good soil -can’t do a lot without it unless you are growing wildflowers. Once again a good book will help you with this.

Good luck. Hope you begin to enjoy gardening as much as so many of us do.

i want to start gardening because there are some really cool flowers and i live up in the mountains in colorado. we have a beatiful 3 story house and a view of the continential divide on one side and estes park on the other but we are missin one thing… COLOR so i want to start gardening. can neone tell me some easy flowers to grow to begin and can you tell me some tips and tricks for gardening??? i would also like to trade seeds via snail mail with people in other states so if u r interested please send me an email at skate.fairy@yahoo.com

GardenersCardiff answers:

The key to successful gardening is good soil. Without it, you won’t grow much. Adding things like compost, manure, peat moss, grass clippings and such, then turn the soil and work the organic materials in to at least 15 inches down. If you like, you can take a soil sample to your local ag extension and they will test it and tell you exactly what you need. Good luck!! Gardening is awesome and addictive and keeps me sane. I’m not sure about what flowere advice to give you for your part of the country. But here’s a hint- most garden centers sell the plants that do the best in a given locale. Even if you don’t purchase the plants, you have an idea.

Paul asks…

Do you know any gardening tips I could use?

I am a 12-year-old gardener. I just planted 4 yellow tomato plants. I want to make sure I have a successful garden so do you have a tip or 2 for me?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Never water your plants in the heat of mid day…feed them in the mornings, or evenings, when it is cooler.

GOOD LUCK!

Gardening tips?

I am recently moved to Adelaide Australia & would like some suggestions as to what grows best here.I came from Ireland where the climate was drastically different.I am planning a new garden as the existing one was very run down

GardenersCardiff answers:

I have been to Adelaide & noticed the beautiful gardens but have no recollection of the types of flowers I saw. However, their climate is much the same as ours here in NSW, so I suggest you go for lots of natives such as grevillias, banksias, etc. Also roses hydrangeas, agapanthus, any kind of annual or perennial you see in the plant nurseries. Also, take note of what’s growing well in your neighbourhood.

gardening tips?

i have just moved into a new flat with a small garden that does not look like its been touched for years, it has potential to be a nice area, but i need some advice i have never done anything more than a bit of weeding to a garden before so where do i start, any tips will be brillaint, i want to either lay grass seeds or a lawn, i don’t have loads of moneys as everything has gone into the flat, but i would like to make it good for the summer
if i’m putting grass seeds down then when do i need to have then down by for it to be green by summer??

GardenersCardiff answers:

Check out my answer to John T about planting a lawn from scratch:
(I need to plant grass for my entire yard from scratch, Can you please step me through the process?)

The timing will depend on what type of see you choose to put down:
Annual Ryes are garbage grasses this is what makes up quick grow type seed blends. They will come up in 3 days but die when the summer heat hits them.
Perennial ryes 6 to 10 days, you should start seeing the seeds sprouting.
Fescue’s 2 to 3 weeks
Blue grasses 6 to 8 weeks.
A good seed blend is made up of a mixture of all 3 main types. Keep in mind that germination times also depend on moisture content in soil and soil temperatures. Most grass seeds will start to germinate once the soil temp gets above 50* f.

Sandra asks…

Do you have any gardening tips?

I am new to the whole gardening thing and i just planted 4 yellow tomato plants. Do you have any gardening tips?

GardenersCardiff answers:

This is what you want to do… Find a mentor. A neighbor, a friend, a relative, someone who lives near you and is a green thumb. Not only will they give you great advice geared towards your climate zone, they will probably also give you all kinds of clippings and plantings to use in your own garden!
