Do you already have any special skills like sewing or knitting? Even if you are not a great seamstress, most fabric stores stock some fabric that’s printed with designs and specially made with seams marked and everything so that you can make Christmas pillows or Christmas dolls. Kind of like “sewing for dummies” concept.

Or, do you have ideas how to make a hand-made Christmas tree ornament? If you don’t have any ideas of your own right now, you could try looking in a book either at the library or in a book store and then using that for instructions how to make something. Sometimes there are some very simple things you can make from things that come from a craft store. If you visit a craft store or fabric store, that might give you some ideas.

I personally really like the hand-made ornament idea because it’s something they’ll use over and over. (One of my girlfriends does this every year and I treasure the ornaments she has given me.) You can make these as complicated or as simple as you like. For example, you could blow up a small balloon then wrap it with some fancy ribbon or lace, then coat the whole thing with Elmer’s glue. When it dries, you pop the balloon and remove it, and you are left with an ornament. Or you could sew felt ornaments in the shape of snowflakes, or crochet some if you have that skill. One year my friend took paper egg carton, cut the triangle parts out and then glued those together to make fancy shapes, and painted them.

However, here’s another simple one: Bake something. Home made baked cookies or cake is always appreciated. If you’re not really good at baking, there are some types of hand-made candy that are pretty simple. You should not try this without looking at a cookbook, but for example you can just melt some white chocolate (low heat, microwave) and dip pretzels in it, and then while the chocolate is still soft you sprinkle it with red and green sprinkles. Lay it on a cookie sheet to cool, and then pack it in pretty bag. Yum! That’s just one idea; real cookbooks have many ideas like this.

Another idea is that at many stores including Wal Mart etc you can get a kit to make a gingerbread house. All it takes is the kit plus powdered sugar to make the icing.

Last but not least is actually one of my favorites, which my mom does every year for her friends. She buys dirt or rocks, some fancy little pots, and some flower bulbs such as narcissus or crocus, then she plants them in the pot (ask your garden shop for some instructions). The bulb will not be blooming at Christmas, but it will eventually make a beautiful flower and your friend will really enjoy it for some time to come in the spring.
