Your Questions About Gardening

Susan asks…

LOST: plans for an outdoor tile topped table w/ bent iron legs?

A couple of years ago, or a bit more, I found excellent plans for this table in an outdoor/gardening type magazine. My family gets numerous magazines and I really have no idea which ones they got then, perhaps a Reiman publication??
The table was made from joining a couple plywood circles, a “concrete” board circle, and coating this with a pink sealant to make it water proof. 1″ tiles were placed around the edge and on top. The legs were made from heavy iron bands that were bent in a jig made from 2×4’s and plywood. Instructions for the jig were included.
I’ve gone through so many old magazines and just can’t find it.
Please-answer or advice on an easier search.

GardenersCardiff answers:

THE DESCRIPTION OF YOUR TABLE, SOUNDS LIKE ONE I SAW ONCE IN POPULAR MECHANICS OR POPULAR SCIENCE MAGAZINE. YOU MAY BE ABLE TO GO ON LINE, AND CHECK OUT THEIR ARTICLES ON DO IT YOURSELF ARTICLES. BY YOUR DESCRIPTION, SOUNDS LIKE YOU PRETTY WELL REMIMBER HOW IT IS SUPPOSE TO LOOK. DESIGN YOUR OWN TABLE.

Grease and flour cake pans 2 8 or 9 inch round

Robert asks…

The little Pig Farm UK – anyone had any experiences?

Hi everyone. I am looking to hear anyone’s experiences (good or bad) on the Little Pig Farms LTD based in the UK? They are now a Franchise.

We personally have had an awful experience. We paid over £1200 for 2 Deulux Micro Pigs. We did our research carefully, and made sure we used a big breeder or seemed legit. We made sure we got all correspondence in writing, including guarantees that our pigs would make 14″ maximum at adult height. This was important for us, not from a material point of view but because our garden is small. We made the Little Pig Farm aware of this and they assured us it would not be a problem and they didn’t need more room.

We collected 2 piglets in September. In the car on the way home one kept sneezing and coughing, so we called Jane Croft (the breeder) immediately when we returned home. She told us he was probably allergic to the straw and to ignore it as he was fine. So we did, however after 4 days of this being entirely the same (and several calls to Jane), the piglet rapidly deteriorated and we rushed him to the vets. We called Jane who agreed and put in writing she would reimburse us for ANY veterinary costs related to this as he was clearly ill when we got him! In a desperate attempt to save his life, and us monitoring and caring for him round the clock, he lost his fight for life a week later. We were utterly devestated. One, becasue Jane should have advised us to take him straight to the vets if she was reputable, and 2 because we loved him and should never have been sold a sick piglet. It cost around £400.

Jane agreed to supply us a second piglet, which after weeks of us constantly chasing she eventfully did a month later. By now, Bungle the first piglet was over 14″ tall and still growing!! The second piglet when he got home was walking around his house and over the next few days had huge worms (up to 5″) coming out of his bottom. We found several on the floor in the house! We took him to the vets who said he had a huge worm burden, and wormed him. They said he clearly had not been wormed properly as a baby (even though pigs are prone to worms) to have such a huge infestation poor thing.

He was supplied to us not castrated as the vets had stopped serving her through not paying her bills! So Jane has also promised to reimburse the castration costs which wont happen!

Anyway after lots of hassle and never any support from Jane as promised. We now have 2 pigs, one is 8 months old and still growing. He is over 20″. The second piglet has terrible joints and hips and will cause us lots of vets bills in the future. He can hardly walk properly and the vet said this is likely to be through poor breeding or inbreeding of the stock. He is now 18″ and 6 months old.

We were also told if you are used to animals they are easy, far from it! They are constant trouble, and one is impossible to house train and just wees wherever! We are very experienced in all sorts of live stock and have always had lots of dogs. But these are not easy or domestic pets. We love them too much to let them go, but i do regret purchasing them. They are clearly not happy living in a house as we were told they were! They have eaten the plaster off our walls and chewed holes in the carpets!

To top this all off, Jane owes us over £400, and is refusing to refund us saying she has no money and we will have to take her to court. However she is still breeding, and selling piglets, and appearing on shows and magazines all the time! We would like our money back on the pigs also. We could have paid £200 and got the best lovely Kune Kunes from a reputable breeder with proper bloodlines!

So this is my experience. Does anyone else have any to share with me?

Thanks
Emma
Thank you both for your responses, i will ensure i contact trading standards and see what they can do. We want our money back on the pigs minus what they are worth as they are, probably £50 each tops! They are going to be big!!
Ill post on here tomorrow how i get on!
Thanks
Emma

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hi Emma,

What a sorry situation, im very sorry to hear about your pigs being ill it is such a shame. Jane Croft will tell you she has no money, its what she tells every one else. If you want your money back you will have to fight for it and fight hard otherwise you will go to the back of the queue.
Firstly if your pigs are far bigger than what was stated i would ask for a full refund be aware she has the right to ask for the pigs back.
If you do not wish to give the pigs back the go for redress offer her a fair price for the pigs £50.00 each say and request the rest of your monies be returned.
You need to get trading standards involved you will have little joy on your own, contact Jason Williams at – Jason.Williams@cambridgeshire.gov.uk.
He works closely with Jane Croft and as ensured many refunds he may be able to help you.

My experience was not positive and there are many others just like us, with regards to the pig with the hip problems you know that pigs is going to cost you a fortune and no doubt no matter what happens will suffer a lifetime of pain – you may be better off sending him back to JC let her foot her own bills. I know you probably love him now but this pig should never have been sold to in the first place. If you need any thing else send me an email and good luck, i hope you get your money back.
