Sandra asks…

what are the laws regarding growing your own tobacco?

David asks…

How do you grow your own tobacco indoors?

With skyrocketing tobacco prices, I want to grow my own tobacco. However, I don’t have a lot of space at my place, so I want to grow it in my closet. How would I go about doing this? What do I need?

Also, it needs to be relatively covert. My landlord is real nosy and told me growing tobacco would violate my lease, but I think he’s just saying that.

GardenersCardiff answers:

It’s perfectly legal to grow tobacco in all 50 states. I don’t understand why your landlord might have a problem with it.

Tobacco grows fairly easily. It likes full sun and needs decent drainage. Seeds are available from several sources online. I bought mine from They are fairly inexpensive.

You would probably not be able to grow your tobacco successfully in a closet. The plants grow fairly large and need sun.

If you can find some land to cultivate with tobacco plants, you could grow your own and make your cigarettes for less than $5 a carton. There is some work involved in it.
