Your Questions About Gardening

Daniel asks…

Most of my friends are international students?

I’m a sophomore in high school and I’ve been in the same school since I was in kindergarten. (Well, not exactly the same school but the same school association so it’s just different buildings but same people. This is a private school btw if it makes any difference.) Most of the people I grew up with formed tight knit groups. I was always a drifter during elementary and middle school hopping from one crowd to another. The school always gets a lot of international students (about 30 or so) but they usually stick together. This year I made friends with a bunch of Chinese and Korean exchange students (all of the international students are Chinese and Korean except for 2 from Spain). I really feel that they are more accepting than the students that have been here for years. The international students usually sit together in a big row of tables in the cafeteria and they invited me to sit with them. Now I’m sitting at that table for lunch everyday and I noticed that I’m the only American that sits at this table. Some of the American students started to notice this and began teasing me about it. They called me names like “Asian wannabe” and said “Do you hate your own race?” (Is this racism?) It really hurt my feelings. I don’t understand why they would say things like that to me.. Is it so weird that most of my friends are international? What should I do?

GardenersCardiff answers:

THEY sound weird. “Hate your own race”- what kind of environment breeds such nonsensual ignorance? If they ever go somewhere else to sprout their nonsense, they won’t ever be taken seriously, at least not where I’m from. It’s laughable, but sad too in a way.

Thomas asks…

Non-Blacks, Do You Ever Get Negative Feedback For Listening To RHH?

Not just from Blacks, but also from folks within your own race.

I know there was once a popular air-personality out here, that said other Latinos used to hate on him, and say, “Why do you listen to that miate music” and things to that nature.

Also, I hear a lot of Blacks complain, because they feel that Blacks can never have anything to themselves. They don’t embrace the fact that others enjoy listening to Black music.

I take up for you guys because hip-hop has dominated the music scene for many years, and obviously it’s what you grew up on, I know Mexicans that can’t stand Spanish music.

Just curious if this has happened to you?
@ Chicago

That’s a different subject!
@ Avalon

I know plenty of White parents that will NOT let their kids listen to rap because it’s black music…they’re paranoid that if you listen to rap, that it leads to gang violence and drugs. Keep it real!!
@ sarahxox

There’s no need for WET. The reason why BET was created is because the representation (or lack thereof) of AA on television. And even with BET our representation is still not as comparable to Whites. Pay attention next time you watch television. You’ll see.

And we have the NAACP awards for the same reason, before Halle and Denzel won their Oscars a few years back, there wasn’t a black person that had received an Oscar in more than 40 years and that was for a supporting role. No matter how often I explain to people, the existence, of HBCU’s, BET, NAACP, Black National Anthem…they still don’t get it.

And if that upsets you, then you should be equally upset when you turn on the news and it’s a national crisis when a White woman comes up missing (hollaway, levy, peterson)…but c’mon there has to be a missing minority somewhere out there. That alone tells us that minorities are not as valued.
@ Everyone

I never give thumbs down…just want you to know that!
@ Pimp Croissants

I don’t think Avalon is going to like that!! I don’t mind White people listening, they can’t listen, but every other race besides black can??
@ BKS

Thanks for your input, and the guy you are referring to is Avalon!!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Iono but I will say this. I’m sick of white ppl puttin their hands in every damn thing. They ruined breakdancing, Soul Train, MC Hammer’s rep, now they want Hip HOP!! It’s like dang can’t we have anything to ourselves without having dip they lil hands in ish!!?? Shhiiiiiiiiiz!

Edit: OK for real I’m sorry. But white ppl just try and snatch up everythang and make it their own. They be puttin their own spin on thangs that originated from black culture than it ain’t black anymore. Remember what happened to soul train in the 90’s. It wasn’t soul train no more it shoulda been called “whitey train” . Now them and all the other races be usin the N word like it’s goin out of style and ish!!! Yeah im talkin bout all races too not just white. They don’t need to be using the N word dang

Lizzie asks…

R&P! How did you get your taste in music?

A lot of people find their music on their own, but a lot don’t. Like kids that grow up in poor urban areas generally like rap and hip hop, just because all of their homies listen to it, with exceptions of course.

Some people are influenced by parents. A lot of young kids love the Hannah Montana and Jonas, but its my opinion that they just like it because everyone else does. Its really just peer pressure sometimes.

I didn’t listen to music until I was 13 or so. I was on a vacation in Europe, and I was using my dad’s iPod, and I played Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog. I had vaguely heard of them, and some songs on the radio, but after that, classic rock was my life.
I really appreciate the long answers. I like reading them, and I will read them all.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Well, I grew up in the 80’s, so I pretty much listened to a lot of 80’s music from a young kid, up to about 15 y.o. Then I found White Zombie and Fear Factory (Obsolete). Then I was really getting into Stanley Kubrick movies, and A Clockwork Orange became my favorite movie, so I bought the soundtrack and used to drive my car at top speed blasting the 9th symphony with so much adrenaline pumping through me that my eyes felt like they’d roll in the back of my head involuntarily. Somehow, some way, I just asked myself one day “why don’t I have any Pink Floyd?” So I had a friend burn two Cd’s: Dark Side of the Moon and Echoes (the greatest hits). Listening to Dark Side all the way through with my massive speakers arranged just right so that my head was in the acoustically perfect spot ended up changing my life forever. I instantly understood so much more about life (and without drugs, too) and reality. I became a Floyd Fan forever. The next life altering album I bought was the Wall. With that album I then understood the importance of NOT having an emotional wall, and how HAVING a wall could ruin your life…or at least make you miss so many things that could’ve happened if you didn’t have a wall. The next band I discovered seemed to be by divine intervention. I was driving to work and decided to listen to the radio (which I never did. I always listened to Cd’s and ONLY Cd’s). The radio was full of static (reminding me why I didnt listen to it) and all of the sudden, the static stopped. A song came on that was unlike anything I had ever heard before. The voice was deep and crooning, yet rich with a strange melody and strange backup music. I thought to myself, “is this Jim Morrison? I’ve never heard Jim Morrison, how the hell would I know if this is Jim Morrison?” Once the song ended, the radio announcer said that it was, in fact, Jim Morrison and the Doors and that song was People are Strange….then the static came back on immediately. So I bought some Doors music.

Now I’m a musician (singer, and keyboardist/organist) in a progressive rock band in Las Vegas. We’re playing a show tonight. You can hear some of our tunes at: www.myspace.com/bluevinoband and www.myspace.com/internationalpeacecorporation

My favorite music now is:

Pink Floyd, the Doors, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Leon Russell, Janis Joplin, Toots Thielemans, Yes, Tool, White Zombie/Rob Zombie, John Coltrane, Tangerine Dream, and so very many more.
