Advice on growing your own mushrooms?
Not sure where to post this,
I have bought one of those “grow your own Shii-Take mushrooms kits” from a garden centre.
I am at the stage where they have instructed me to put them in a bucket of water for 48 hours then put them in 2-3 cm of water in the polystyrene box and leave at the window for around 5 weeks.
They state that the germinating period will happen within that time however, it has not stated if the box lid should be opened or closed.
I have kept it open and the instructions say that there should be lots of white stuff (which there is) where the mushys will grow from.
I am wondering if any one has bought these kits and if they have kept the lid open at this stage or had to have them in complete darkness for any amount of time??
I am following the instructions to the letter but have never done this before and don’t know if it looks right. Any advice on this is appreciated.

The Mycellium gives off carbon dioxide as it grows, which helps it grow. It also needs subdued light, not direct light. When it pins (tiny bumps that will grow into edible part of the Shroom) CO2 will cause the flush to be tall and spindly as it reaches for the Oxygen.
Set it on a shelf with subdued light. Leave the lid open. When the shroom pins, fold the box so plenty of oxygen gets to the shroom, so the caps and stapes won’t be deformed.

I’ve got acidic clay soils. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am assuming you are talking about the Kombucha Mushroom. It is not a drug, or have any “odd effects” 100% legal….you drink the tea you make from it. It is considered a healthy drink..I myself never found any benefits from it. You can find may places to buy it online…it reproduces on it’s own, so you only need to buy it once. These sites will also offer all kinds of free info on the Tea making…many, many different recipes….I Always used a large glass jar with a large mouth, because it will grow to the size of the container. It wants a mild / dark space to grow. It sits in water & as you change the water…weekly, it is the old water that you use to make your tea. You will also have lots & lots new Kombucha to separate and sell or use as plant fertilizer….
