Your Questions About Gardening

Ruth asks…

what are some cool tactical weapon type things that can be used in paintball?

I have paintball practive tomorrow morning with my team, and I wanna bring some tactical type things to use. We go play by ourselves out in the desert so there’s no rules and everything goes. I want stuff that can be made at home like paint grenades or flash bombs or something. Any suggestions? And I already checked directions and I can’t make grenades or flash bombs so no smart comments please.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I dont know if you have time to rig it up tonight, but build yourself a potato gun, then cut the rim off a plastic cup, and then a slit down the side, it should fill a 2 inch barrel easy enough, then you can put anything you want in the cut, paintballs, egg’s, even water ballons as long as the ballon is compleatly in the cup and dose not touch the pvc (if it touches the pvc the cup will “bite” and break the ballon) now put one of your empty ballons on the mouth of a soda bottle and you can squeze anything in the bottle into the ballon, my personal favorite for a paintball fight is a runny mix of flower and water, but when halloween comes around you could think piss, amonia, spoiled milk, you can even get powdered cow’s blood from most garden shops (sold as a fertilizer) and then mix that with a little water to fill your ballon with!

Alright, device 2.
Take a pack of TP, an M80 (or other strong fire cracker) and a good amout of electric tape, unroll one roll of TP, then flatten the tube one way then the other,( so it looks like a square) now seal one end with electirc tape, mix your unrolled TP with some water to make a paste, and fill your empty cardboard square, place your M80 in with the fuse sticking up and seal with tape (so your fuse is still exposed) give your new home made grenade a couple of wraps with your tape but be carefull not to cover your creases because that is where it will rupture as the M80 gose off.

Donald asks…

How to cook homemade versions of the frozen veggie burgers, etc?

And would it be cheaper to make it homemade or to buy them already made?
I’m talking about the garden burgers, black bean burgers, chick*n patties and nuggets, etc etc etc.
Do you think it would be cheaper to make these myself and freeze them, or to just buy them already made from Boca, Morningstar, etc?
And do you have any recipes or ideas on how to make these homemade?
Thanks kindly in advance!

GardenersCardiff answers:

1 (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed or 12 ounces of leftover lentils, baked beans (homemade), or 1 can of veggie baked beans with liquid
1/4 cup of finely chopped shallots
1/4 to 1/2 cup of chopped yellow or red pepper
1/4 cup of firm tofu drained in cheese cloth (can use more)
1/4 cup of celery, well washed
1 brown egg with no blood spot, room temp. Well mixed
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons of ground walnuts or almonds
1 teaspoon of chili powder or low sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon of thyme
1 teaspoon of fresh parsley, washed & check for bugs, chopped
1/2 cup of graham bread crumbs toasted or gluten-free bread crumbs (add more if needed to make firmer burgers)
1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, ground, pinch of salt (if not using soy sauce)
Pinch of fresh cinnamon and ginger

I grill or fry lightly the veggies: shallots, pepper, celery in grapeseed oil. When onions clear I add the spices, walnuts, soy sauce.

Then in mixer or blender or processor (which I prefer), mix the veggie mix with egg, tofu, crumbs until mixture holds together. If too dry I have added grapeseed oil or white wine. Form in hands into four to five patties, I made six and serve with a portobello mushroom cap (the huge ones, grilled with low sodium soy & red pepper oil) and “caps” the formed burger in the sandwich.

Tastes better if you can grill the patties with salsa, or fresh tomato slice, or even cheddar cheese slice at the last minute. I have also used the extra liquid from the homemade baked beans or added roasted red peppers instead of mushroom, you can add fresh peas, but I never use corn or corn products unless I know it isn’t GM corn. Takes 8 to 10 min. On grill, in oven on sheet, 10-15 min. Until brown, turn. You can use pan, to brown but use grapeseed oil for the benefits. Buy FIT to wash all veggies, coating on eggplant, etc. Is wax from petrol products or lard.

You can change the above recipe to use 3x more ginger, 2x more soy, 2x more onion and cinnamon and add fresh orange oil (organic) or tangerine oil to the tofu and use 2x more and 1/2 with lentils (not beans). I grill slices of oranges with skin, but remove it to add to burger for a top. Grilled with roasted garlic paste is different & I add orange liquor to make a sauce from organic mayo, white pepper, orange juice, lemon juice, & honey to sweeten it. Just mix small batches of various spices & fruits & veggies to find combinations you might like to try.

You can use peeled slices of eggplant, dipped in gluten-free almond or walnut flour or even potato starch (no corn), then in egg, then in left-over crumbs mixed with a tablespoon of parmesan cheese. You can bake, but I fry lightly with grapeseed oil. I serve on toasted whole wheat kaiser roll or homemade gluten free rolls with fresh roasted peppers or homemade salsa with a slice of cheddar cheese, easier to freeze too.

Mary asks…

best vegetables for a beginner to plant?

i aint never planted anything before but i would like to set up a little garden for me and my daughter. what are the things that i need (soil or tools?), and what are good veggies or herbs that are good to plant on semi shady land? and when should i plant them?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Cool Weather: Lettuce, radishes, broccoli, snow peas, onion seeds, bulbs, and/or plants. I’ve already put in my snow peas and they will come up when they are ready to. The semi-shady land *might* allow you to grow those I mentioned during the summer heat as well if they are protected enough…it depends on where you live. You can stagger the plantings on those I’ve mentioned as well so they keep coming…about two weeks apart. The onions, however, should be planted all at the same time. If you plant some bulbs, seeds, and plants you should be able to harvest green onions for salads, cooking, and veggie trays.

Herbs can be grown inside and out. Sprouts can be grown all year long indoors.

Tomatoes can be started in the house asap on top of the a slightly warm appliance such as a freezer, moved to a sunny window after they pop up, and slowly starting with shade, moved out to the garden. Tomatoes prefer full sun but will grow in semi-shady. Just be sure to give them something natural for a boost. I feed my tomato plants dried banana peels and get too many tomatoes ; )

As for the rest, they are easy to grow when it warms up..find out the planting date for your zone: Beans are very easy. Pole beans can be trained on a tee-pee made of sticks, poles, or bamboo, and tied with jute both on the top and around the bottom of the tee-pee – look for an example on the net. Lettuce can be planted inside the tee-pee when you plant the pole beans.

Explore this site and you can also ask questions as well : )

I don’t know how old your daughter is but if she’s at least a toddler get her involved with a little tool set/hat/watering can of her own.
