Your Questions About Gardening

David asks…

Where do you get your ideas from? Names, plots ect?

Where do you get your names for Characters, Towns names (if you have made them up) and Plots? Or just any part of your story? I literally made my plot up because i was really bored after an op a few months ago. I no parts of the story is real for so many people as it’s about abuse but this pacific story is not based on anyone. Also death of a twin is a big part of my story and i do know someone who lost a twin young but it’s not based on them though. I was talking to someone today about where some of my ideas came from but i have to say i have to idea. My main character is called Adele and i didn’t even like that name (it’s growing on me now though) but it would be impossible to change because she wouldn’t suit any other name as she has become Adele and not Sarah for example. Her last name is Coleman and i until recently i thought it was a random last name but the other night while eating my tea there on the table was Colman’s mustard. I had been seen it on the table every time it was out and must of took the name and when i came to writing a last name that came to me without even knowing. My town name has come from a TV programme and haven’t get googled it to see if it’s a real place. If it’s not do you think i can still keep it? Oh never even thought about that lol. Places like the bar/restaurant is based on a place i went once but with my own adaption and the hotel in town is based on one where i live but apart from that i have made the rest up- it’s easy and i can make it my own So i guess my ideas are mostly mine. I have had a few dreams about my story and they have helped with a few scenes that i have yet to write but they are written down so i will remember.
I would love to have a bigger imagination and come up with a wonderful plot and be the next JK Rowling haha but don’t we all?
Sorry it’s long by the way

I just find one sentence that I like. It could be a sentence which describes someone, or something someone says and I get a plot from that. I just think about the reasons someone could be saying it, or the reason why someone is doing what they’re doing in the sentence and expand from that.

It’s a weird way of thinking up a plot, I suppose but that’s just how it works for me.

For names, I visit a name site – like babynames.com and I find a name which was popular in the era that the character was born. E.g. If I have a teenager, they’re not likely to be called Margaret or Doris – they’re more likely to be called Hannah or Jennifer or something. And if I have an older character, in their mid 40’s for example, they could be called Alan, or Steve or something that would have been popular when they were born.

For surnames’, just use a road name. E.g. There’s a road near me called Chester Lane, so if your character is called Jacob he could be called Jacob Chester. Or there’s another road called Jensen Avenue. So if I had a character called Jennifer, she could be called Jennifer Jensen.

And town names can be anything. Whether they’re real or not. It’s a fictional story so it can be a fictional place too, or it could be a real place if you want the story to seem more real to the reader. But, if you do use a real place name, make sure you do some research on that place beforehand and use this information in the book so it makes sense.

I think it’s pretty cool the way you came up with your plot and names. I do it differently but we’re all different and are all inspired by different things. I liked how you came up with Coleman accidentally from the mustard, aha.

Hope I Helped, and good luck with your story!
Xx

Ruth asks…

Will you guys tell me your comments on this Editorial?

I’m writing an Editorial that will be published first at MSU and then locally and nation wide. Tell me how you think it flows together, questions it brings to your mind, and any commentary you have on it, please. (It’s in someone else’s point of veiw)

Born in 1960 in Dallas Texas, I come from a long legacy of being a true southern bell, equipped with all the unique traits and learned habits of this particular life style. I spent a good deal of my life on the Mississippi gulf coast, which was a real treat despite being filled with challenging weather. All good things come to an end, I had to go separate ways from the wonderful girlfriends and beloved buddy that made life so interesting at the gulf. I made a new life in Starkville Mississippi attending MSU and majoring in Horticulture. Here I met a real live Iranian who ignited true, crazy, complicated and chaotic love that has been growing for almost thirty years. We loved hard, fought hard, and knew that every year was right.

Thirty six hours is all that lies between my two families in America and Iran. Social living in Tehrav, my neighborhood in Iran, is all about family. My Iranian family is extremely large, as my husband is one of thirteen children who are mostly married and have children. For a matter of fact, there is so many within the family that outside friends are not needed, but are completely accepted.
An average day in Tehrav starts, of course, with breakfast. After asking, I was given the job of walking to the bread store where we buy fresh bread, which we break with tea and yogurt. The owner of the bread shop and I got to know each other well from my many bread runs. During breakfast I start my lunch plans with my mother-in-law. Everyone calls or stops by to make our daily plans and in the side room some of the family prays to Mecka. To me this is perfect. The whole neighborhood knows me, which is hard to believe as I am covered from head to toe in the traditional attire. Despite my height, the color of my eyes, and my deep, southern accent, the neighborhood as a whole has excepted me and made me feel more safe than anywhere on this planet. I feel like a celebrity walking the streets of Tehrav and visiting with vendors, friends, and family.

Each time I have come has been a little bit better. Although I can’t speak Farsi and they can’t speak English, my in-laws and I have found ways to get to know each other better. The more we learn, the easier it is for us to communicate and the smaller the barrier of language becomes. Now, after three trips, we have learned a little of each other’s languages. This communication spreads to the folks of the neighborhood as well as the family. We all try hard and in the end there is understanding, leaving me with peaceful thoughts of how patient these terrific people are to take the time to understand me, and teach me to understand them.

In Terav dogs are considered disgusting creatures. Despite this, one of my family members does own a dog. One day during a family gathering the dog had jumped up and licked one of my nieces in her mouth. Everyone saw and laughed at her reaction as she ran to the bathroom to clean out her mouth. Another day I was leaving a taxi cab and completely forgot my purse inside. The driver spent tedious time asking people around the neighborhood where he could find me and he came and returned it. I was very surprised and honored that he had gone through so much trouble out of the goodness of his heart.

Sadly, however, I have to wait one year to see these beautiful, kind people for a trip that lasts up to three weeks. Once the time is up, always too soon, we all get together to say our sad good-byes. I can never wait to return to this, my family, who loves me and who I love so much. This country, as does my family, gives such beauty in my life. I can’t wait to get back, to feel safe and loved in the embrace of my family and my neighborhood.

Good article. Flows perfectly.

Daniel asks…

If a guy pays for transport and alcohol, should you buy him lunch?

He is struggling financially a bit, but I find it a turn off if the guy can’t pay his way.
I am disabled and when I go out I need lots of rests and a cup of tea. He is fun company, but I feel being used when a man has to have the woman buy him lunch. We are still just friends and should pay for our own meals not me pay for him. If I drive I don’t expect petrol money, he is a grown man and should have a more generous heart. I am going to be tougher next time. Pay your own way, don’t use me, grow up baby, wear your nappy and sit in the high chair. I am not your mother sent to buy you lunch. Why is it so hard to find a decent aussie man, are they all just bogans and you have to move to Europe to get manners?
I like his company but I think he is a bit selfish. I had a hand full of cutlery and asked him to hold it while I gort my purse out and he made a snide comment as though to put me down.
I was in physical pain and just needed to sit down and have a rest. I need a man to look out for me , care about me and not expect me to buy him lunch or am I being mean

GardenersCardiff answers:

Sounds like a user. Cheapskate that wants a free meal. A man should be a man and pay for his meal, if not he is a no hoper user.
Hey Kimberly are you not capable of writing an answer or trying to intimidate others by sounding smart when clearly you are a moron. I will block you because you have no substance to your comments they are just pointless to make you sound like you know it all and you are probably 12 living with your mother and suck your thumb.
