Your Questions About Gardening

Sandy asks…

How big is your garden, how old are you and do you find it easy to maintain?

How big is your garden. What kind of garden is it. How old are you(roughly say teens, mid 20’s, early 50’s, late 70’s etc) and do you find it easy or difficult to maintain?

GardenersCardiff answers:

16′ X 16′ container garden in a cement yard. I’m 57 and disabled. The garden is something hubby and I do together, despite we’re both disabled. We have the “if it works, great. If it doesn’t, oops” approach to gardening. This is a video showing how often “oops” hits over “great,” but it’s all good. Lol

But, if you want some funny videos, check out the rest I made last year. I usually have my stuffed animals narrate for me. (Am I sane? You decide, but there are no kids in this house, except the stuffed animals. Lol)

Lisa asks…

Can you grow jungle geraniums and china rose by pruning?

there is this kind old lady who happens to be my neighbor, whom have been encouraging me to do some gardening,..she has been giving me freshly cut plants of some sort but unfortunately i wasn’t able to grow most of them,..but still fortunately my thumb just won’t stop getting green..anyhow i asked her what should be the best way to do if i would tend to grow some pruned china rose and jungle geraniums,..and then she said i should just stick those into the ground….however im not that satisfied with that kind of answer,..i have already tended the soil and some plants which some she have given are already growing good,..unlike the flowering ones are looking bad, so i just put them in a vase with water and hopefully it would come out better as what the acalypha (which she has also given) is….but it looks like i have to excuse her senesence for giving such a vague answer about the rose and geraniums

and oh,..im living in a tropical climate,..so we don’t have winter problem here

thanks

GardenersCardiff answers:

You can propagate cuttings of most plants, some you may do better getting them started in pots. Maybe you should also try using a rooting compound like Clonex Rooting Compound Gel, Dip’N Grow, Rootone, or make your own.

Hormones stimulate various functions in plant growth. The first hormone discovered to cause root growth is called “auxin” and the synthetic version of auxin is what we find in commercially sold compounds today.

The willow plant is a natural source of auxin. Therefore, it can be very easy to make up a fresh batch of homemade rooting compound whenever you need to plant some new cuttings.
Gather a handful of willow branch tips

Chop or mash into smaller pieces

Fill small container with pieces

Fill container with water & allow to sit overnight

Remove willow pieces

Dip cutting into the water, covering the stem

Put cutting into your potting mix (or moist sand)

Cover with a plastic bag to retain moisture

After roots form, re-pot

Also, don’t get rid of the willow water when you’re done with your cuttings. Save it to water your plants!
If you don’t have access to willow, dissolve a few aspirins in a jar of water. Aspirin is made from willow bark, so it can have the same effect as the willow water.

Ruth asks…

How to clean an over grown garden pond?

I bought my house this winter and now with it being spring I want to clean out the two tier garden pond but the lower larger (aprox 12 ft by 4 ft wide by 3 ft deep in the middle) is over grown with tall plants and thick sludge and roots at the bottom. I drained the water and tried pulling the plants out but they are to thickly rooted into the sludge. I don’t want to rip the rubber lining by using a metal Thatcher or rake to rip it out not to mention I’ve already tried and its just to mangled and stuck to the bottom. Is there any easier way to get this pond cleaned and ready for fish? Maybe a chemical made for killing these weeds and making it easy to rip them out?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Since we are in the topic of ponds, I’d recommend getting a pond filter or some sort of uv clarifier if u are going to put fish there. It really helps the maintenance aspect of owning a pond and the good thing is that you don’t need to keep buying filters because some models allow you to just clean the sponge part of the filter.
