Your Questions About Gardening

Betty asks…

Planning a vacation to NYC. Questions about where to stay and traveling?

My boyfriend, myself and two friends are planning a trip to New York City on July 24-27. I was wondering about places to stay. We would like to stay in NYC but it is far too expensive. Where else should we look to stay that is around NYC and is easy to get to NYC and back?

Also, What are some places we should def. go too?

GardenersCardiff answers:

If you are looking for affordable place in NYC (and thi is by nyc terms) I stayed at the Holiday inn at Lafayette and Canal st. GREAT place, clean, friendly staff, close to shopping, food, subway stops. It was $120/night (which isn’t too bad). I would recommend NOT staying in Jersey for sure. I tried that another time and wow! It cost $70 to get INTO manhatten (3 miles away) and $95 to get back. It is ridculuous what they can get away with when crossing state lines. At that price, you really aren’t saving anything by staying there. You could always look for a B &B on Staten island, the ferry from Staten island to Manhatten is free so that may be one way to go.

Def check out Central Park. The staten island ferry is great to just see the skyline and the statue ofliberty from the waters as well. Try to get to a broadway show. Wicked, Rent (which is closing soon), In the Heights are all my recommendations, especially if your boyfriend isn’t really into musicals I’d go with rent or in the heights. Try to catch a yankees game (if u can) as Yankee statium is closing at the end of this season. And is just a beautiful stadium. There is also tours you can take which are really fun. (check ticketmaster.com for those tickets) uh. What else? Times Square obviously (right next to broadway too). The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) is great, as well as the Metroplitan Museum of Art..and this one is right alongside Central Park. Gorgeous views from the rooftop gallery.
There is the empire state building (although as tempted as you’ll be don’t go at sunset….try the middle of the day) it is insane if you try to go around nighttime.
Hmm..what else have I done there? Canal street shopping is pretty awesome. It may be nice to see Wall St. And the Trade Tower site (although it really is just a giant whole in the ground at the moment.)
NBC studio tour, or the rockefeller tour.
Madison Square gardens has a tour you can take which was fun as well.

Check out the NYC Pass http://www.newyorkpass.com/index.asp It has a lot of discounts and free admission to a lot of thigns I’ve mentioned (plus you get to skip[ the line at some places) It’s worth checking out. We definately made GREAT use of it.

Try tripadvisor.com they have some great attraction/restaurant/museum listings. Cause I know I am forgetting SOOO much.

Also try hopstop.com great site to show you how to get form point A to Point B in NYC by subway.

Anymore questions just go to my profile and send me a message. I’d LOVE to help you out.

James asks…

I’ve got LOADS of fruit from my garden, what shall i make for pudding after a traditional Sunday lunch?

I’ve got apples, plums and pears, i could make an orchard fruit crumble with creamy custard, OR strawberries, raspberries blackberries and blackcurrants, i could make a cheesecake, or some homemade ice-cream to go with stewed fruit….help!

GardenersCardiff answers:

Oh, that is SO EASY (to answer and to make!). Apples, plums, pears and blackberries in a hot fruit compote. You can either stew these with a little sugar (and maybe brandy) and serve with ice cream or custard, or you can make a crumble. The straws and raspberries you should (at this time of year since it’s after-season) make jams. The blackcurrants? Well, the sky’s the limit. You can make your own jelly to serve with game. You can use them as decoration for meat and game dishes and desserts. You can make a blackcurrant tart or cheesecake. Or you can make your own creme de cassis with white spirit and sugar syrup and have home-made kir royales every Sunday for 3 months!
