Your Questions About Gardening

Donald asks…

How do you grow hops?

I want to grow my own hops (I live in southeastern Michigan) how would I go about this?

GardenersCardiff answers:

good luck – great hobby

William asks…

Homebrewers: Will my hop rhizomes grow this year?

Last season I planted 6 hop rhizomes to grow my own hops. I planted too late and 5 of the 6 plants didn’t take… no vines, no nothing.
Do I have a chance of them coming up this year, or is it a lost cause? I’m planting new ones this year regardless, but I won’t be able to get some of the varietals I’d like, such as Tettnang or Columbus.
Any input is appreciated.

GardenersCardiff answers:

I think it depends on how bad your winter was, and how lucky you are. Planting anything late is a tricky business. Good luck with the new crop.

Carol asks…

What is the best book to get if I want to start Home Brewing beer?

I want to start Home Brewing in my basement. I live in Wisconsin, and hops and other ingredients are readily available, I also have enough land that I can also grow some of my own grains and hops as well. I love beer, darker the better, and I love the rewards of hard work. Any suggestions will be well rewarded with 2 points, possibly 10.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Hands down, Papazian’s book, already recommended. Marty Nachel’s book Homebrewing for Dummies, isn’t bad either. After you get those two, consider the one from the Seven Barrel Brewery (for the recipes) and Brian Kunath’s book Fearless Brewing (for the tables). You can also get good information from the website.
