Your Questions About Gardening

Richard asks…

What, if anything, can I plant in a vegetable garden in Zone 7a in late June/early July?

I live in zone 7a and have some additional space in my vegetable garden. Is it too late to plant anything? Also, when answering please indicate if you are referring to seeds or seedlings. I am quite confused by the information online.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Seeds all…
Green beans – sow every two weeks until mid-August 55 days to maturity.
Sow broccoli / cabbage / cauliflower / romaine in early July. Harvest late September.
Sow short-season tomatoes. Harvest mid-September.
Still time for 70-day corn….okra…and zuchinni.
Sow snow peas early August. Harvest mid-October.
Sow spinach mid-September. Harvest late October.

Robert asks…

Is there a complete list of all of yahoo’s groups to look at?

I don’t just want heading and general areas. I would like to find all the specific groups that have to do with growing, gardening, hydoponics, zones, soil, light,….. That is why i was wanting to find a list of every single group. Or how would you suggest i find these things?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Charles asks…

What is a low-maintenance vine for a flower box above my garage?

The box gets direct morning sun. I want something to grow onto the side of the house, but not get too crazy. I live in gardening zone 7. Flowering would be nice, but not a necessity.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Cross Vine is the best choice for Zone 7. It is native, mostly evergreen, and blooms in May with yellow or orange flowers. In the fall the leaves change to burgundy but only the oldest leaves fall off. It attaches itself to rough surfaces like brick, stucco or rough sawn wood with tiny tendrils that do not hurt the wall or masonry and are easily removed. Other vines either have to be attached artificially by you, or they grow their own holdfasts or rootlets so strong that they are extremely difficult to remove. Their holdfasts may also ruin the wall surfaces. There is no other vine for Zone 7 that does so well., and will not hurt your wall.
As for your desire for something “not too crazy” that is up to you. Any vine should be hard pruned back every year or two to keep it from looking unkept. Cross Vine should be cut back to about 2 inches above soil level (yes I said 2 inches) every year, immediately following after the blooms fall off. It will grow back very quickly, looking fresh and lovely again in no time.
