Your Questions About Gardening

Sandra asks…

Deciding between Feline Pine and Swheat Scoop?

I am sick of clumping clay litters and ready to try something natural. I would like opinions from those who have used either or both of these products. I am interested in how well they control odor and how easy it is to clean the box (do either of these products clump at all, and if not, how often do you change the entire box?), and how well your kitties accepted the new litter. Also, I would like to compost the used litter (sans feces, of course) if that can be done–anyone tried it?
Thanks for your help!

GardenersCardiff answers:

I have mulched Feline Pine right into my garden. You know what’s a great side benefit that they don’t advertise? The smell of the cat urine will discourage squirrels and rabbits from getting in the garden.

SWheat Scoop is good stuff, too. I have used both, and been pleased with the odor control. World’s Best Cat Litter is another good one – better clumping than Sweet Scoop, and made of corn, so also natural. Both of these litters are nice and sandy in texture, which is a texture many cats prefer. I’ve been using Feline Pine mostly because I really like that fresh woodsy smell.

You might want to try both, to see if your cats have a preference (some cats react negetively to the pellet texture of Feline Pine).

Laura asks…

How to sue my ex room mate for unpaid rent?

So I recently evicted my room mate that was not paying rent as agreed. I would like to take the case to small claims court but I am concerned because the only agreement we made about rent was verbal and not written. She was however considered a legal tenant by law and did not contribute to any monthly bills. Would a have a case here? and if so how would I go about everything. P.s I live in Oregon and my room mate lived with me for four months.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes you have a case.

Essentially there is a reasonable expectation that two people not having sex with each other and not parent /child but nevertheless living in the same dwelling would contribute to the costs of the dwelling. The thing to do is say “this is what I say the arrangement was [outline the terms of the verbal contract]” and outline your claims about his representations and if he paid rent at all; Then say even if I’m wrong and the court finds there is no contract, the defendant led me down the garden path letting me think there was one and stayed for free- taking the benefit of my property and causing me to incur costs (by virtue of the fact I could not rent the room to someone else). This is the rent I had to pay, so now I request compensation in the amount of half that for the period of 4 months.

You can absolutely have 2 different sums calculated in 2 different ways pled in the alternative.

Step 1: Download a “Statement of Claim” form from the small claims division of whichever is your local county of the Oregon Circuit Court.

Step 2: Fill it out – in this you outline why the guy owes you money and how much money he or she owes. And file it with the court paying the $50 filing fee.

Step 3: Serve the claim on the defendent – you can pay to get this done. The Sheriff will come around to the defendant in a car with lights and a sireon wearing a gun and a badge looking all intimidating and say to the defendant “You’ve been served son” or some such language. Thereafter if the defendent gets upset the Sheriff can arrest the guy for assault etc. All this for a mere $36 fee. The only downside is the Sheriff won’t tell you when he or she is serving the claim so you can watch taking photos for your Schadenfreude wall.

So far you are out less than a hundo.

Step 4: WAIT -> Defendent has 14 days to respond -> He or she won’t know what hit him. He will need to do research, will think he has to get a lawyer will burn hundos in flapping around sideways like a half dead fish. At this point you could call him and say settle for 100% and you don’t get my costs and expenses bill.

If they do not respond in the 14 days file a “Request for Judgement” form and lodge it.

Step 5: If they file a defence then you will receive a copy of the defence and you will have to go to court to argue the merits of the case – its a bit like Judge Judy at this time.

Step 6: If you win at trial or you get a default judgement then the defendant must comply with orders to pay. If the defendent does not comply go to the clerk of the court and fill out a Garnishment form (Costs $35) and the court will go to the defendant’s employer to collect the debt directly from his wages.

It’s all very easy and informal! The judge and court officers expect you to know nothing and if you act as if you know nothing, play with a straight bat when it comes to the facts of your case and treat them with respect, then they will treat you with respect and fairness. If you try to act like Johnnie Cochrine then they will think you are a complete gimp and not respect your case.

Susan asks…

how to prepare a quick salad before work?

i’ve fallen into the habit of eating junk food from the snack bar because im in a hurry of a morning to prepare my lunch.
I want to know how to make a quick easy salad ( i dont like cheese though)
and to be honest, im 19 and not that great in the kitchen, i’d hate to say it, but i dont know how to make one haha all i know is lettuce, tomatoe, capsicum, celery….lol
any suggestions?
much appreciated 🙂 x

GardenersCardiff answers:

I work a weird schedule, working 2 or 3 days a week 12 hour days. This is what I have found to work for me when it comes to making my lunch. Especially since what I take is leftovers and salad the majority of the time, they seem to be ok for a couple of days after being made. It is much better than eating out that vending machine or going to late night drive up window.

The day before I go to work I make a good dinner so I will have left overs. That would be my main dish. Steak, chicken, pasta, pizza, etc. I prepare a salad in a big bowl and split it into seperate smaller containers. I take the salad dressing with me in the bottle. This makes things a lot quicker when I am getting ready to go to work.

As far as different salads, there are a varity of different salad mixes out there. My favorite is the very veggie mix. I put the bag in the bowl and add cherry or grape tomatoes, shredded carrots, boiled eggs, cucumbers, and cheese. I know you said you don’t like cheese, so just leave it out. If the salad is going to be my main course, I will add some ham and/or turkey, or maybe some left over flank steak cut up into bite size pieces. Or left over chicken cut up into bite size pieces.

If you want to make your own salad from scratch, I suggest romane and red leaf lettuce mixed with your favorite veggies. This makes a very good salad but can be very, very expensive. I usually don’t do this until summer time when I can use the majority of what I grow in my garden.

I probably have went on to much but hope this helps you a little.
