Wow, great question and it’s great to see that someone wants to introduce gardening to small children. I applaud you.

I would suggest that you use the sandbox just for the simple fact that it will drain easily. A plastic swiming pool may retain to much water durring a heavy rain. Even with drain holes you may have problems.

To keep it simple as far as setting it up just get a number of bags of a pre made gardening soil at a home center. You can always improve on it later as you learn about gardening.

As far as what to plant to catch the imagination of small children, I would recomend also a seed kit which also can be found in most home centers. They make them just for kids and even have planting designs for the designer little gardens. One that really interest kids is one called a pizza garden. It’s planted in a pizza wedge shape, the plants include Tomatoes, garlic, basil, oregano, onions, parsley and peppers, ect… The little ones really enjoy this type of garden and of course making the pizzas after everything starts to ripen is excellent for learning to cook also.

All I have is a shovel (spade) and a leaf rake. My garden is small so I dug it myself, first cutting in a frame and then sectioning it into smaller chunks then removing the top of each chunk (remove the grass, and roots) Then with the patch of dirt dug it up real good, removing all rocks. Next buy some peat moss and sheep manure and mix it in real well. Use the leaf rake to smooth it down. Plant your seeds (I use wide rows…2ft across) to maximize my small space. I plant beans, snow peas, radish with swiss chard, 2 small hills of zucchinni and 2 tomatoe plants). Good luck.
