Your Questions About Gardening

James asks…

What’s the best way for me to start making music?

I’m twenty years old and music has always been an inspiration to me. I have years of song writing experience. Most of my “songs” started out as poems, but over the past three months I’ve been feeling motivated to start making music. Making music is something I have always wanted to do, but I lack the talent that it would take to create it, plus I have no prior experience. I don’t lack the creative aspect of making music though. Every time I write a song, I know EXACTLY what I want it to sound like and I know all of the instruments that would create the rhythm, the beat and the overall sound. I have only learned one instrument, and that’s the flute. I didn’t even learn how to play it that well. I started writing poetry in third grade and after that, I just couldn’t stop because the inspiration kept flowing. I have almost never run out of ideas and I pride myself in being able to express my ideas in a coherent and metaphorical way.
My musical inspirations that I have grown up with include Bradley Nowell, Kurt Cobain, M. Shadows, Notorious B.I.G, Sean Daily, David Lee Roth and Trent Reznor. I know I am way behind in the skills and talent department, but I have my mind set on this goal. I’m certainly not expecting to become the next Kurt Cobain, but I am willing to put in the work to master a musical instrument and hopefully make it to the music industry. My general approach to achieving a dream is “Keep your expectations low, but your hopes high”. Hip hop is my favorite genre of music, but I also adore rock, metal and ska. My intention is to create different genres of music instead of sticking to one (which I feel would be creatively stifling). I have always wanted to be on the other side of the headphones, the one that made music fun, inspirational, profound and unique. I am willing to sacrifice everything I have to get everything I want. No matter how much money, time or comfort I have to give up to make this work, I feel like I have to know for sure it I’m as good at this as I’m hoping I am. Please guide me to the right direction, so that I can do what I’ve always wanted to do.
I’ve also been observing song lyrics for the past few weeks, trying to get a feel for how to write a song.

Hi there!

Always LOVE seeing people who want to take part in the art of making music. You don’t have that great of a musical background, but you’ve definitely got a foundation to build upon! Since you learned flute, you know the basics of notes and rhythms, which the first step to learning to play music. That’s awesome that you’re a writer too, so am I! 🙂 It made learning guitar and piano so much more fun for me, because I was able to write my own music and words as well. It’s a blast! Sounds like you’re developing your writing quite nicely, all you need is to learn how to put it to music. For me, that happened as both my musical abilities and writing abilities developed.

I’m not too familiar with very many of those artists, though I think hip hop is a great genre! I do love rock and ska though. That’s what I’m doing! I don’t really want to get signed to a label, because then I’d be forced to stick to one genre. I want to play whatever I feel like playing, not what I have to play to sell records. My music is like a mixture of rock, country, pop, and a little bit of indie. I definitely agree that having to choose one genre would be stifling.

Music is so incredible! I’m so glad you see that. It truly is an art. I’m sure you’re going to do fine once you learn the basics of music. I’d suggest picking an instrument you’d like to learn first (I learned guitar first), then trying to get lessons. Find a good teacher near where you live. Also, look up beginner guitar tutorials on YouTube. Especially if you’d rather teach yourself, do that, but since you’re just beginning, you might want to try lessons for your first instrument, then teach yourself the ones after that. I taught myself most of the instruments I play. You can Google beginner tips for whatever instrument you choose to start with. You can also find songwriting tips on YouTube, if you ever find yourself wanting to learn more about the mechanics of songwriting. There are also courses on songwriting you can take at some colleges.

Good luck!

Chris asks…

What type of music should my plants listen to?

Does music have an effect on plants? Which music? Hip-hop? Classical? Jazz? anything?

GardenersCardiff answers:

For my son’s 5th grd. Science project we tried to answer that question. We found some info online from several scientific sources. One said there is no effect and that it is considered pseudo science and impractical. The argument is that plants react to stimulation from the vibrations of sound. Sooo, we tested it. We had one plant outside, one in a room that was virtualy quiet and one we played classic rock too. (’cause that’s my fave) The findings were that the plant that “listened” to rock actualy grew towards the music source and was the largest. The quiet room plant grew towards the sunlight. The outdoor plant didn’t do well at all. Maybe nature was too harsh? Anyway, I do know that plants WILL like music and DO believe it’s just stimulation. You could play some different kinds to try your own experiment?
Good luck?

Betty asks…

Writers: How do you decide what to write when you want to write a variety of stories?

The problem i’ve been having is that there are several stories that I want to write, yet they’re so different in genres that trying to choose is not only anxiety-inducing, but also makes me get bored. For example, on one hand I want to write a high fantasy inspired by Celctic mythology that takes place by the sea; on the other hand, I want to write a heartfelt coming-of-age story inspired by my own battles with mental health. I go back and forth so much that I end up getting sick of everything and not writing at all. I think this may be the explanation for the ‘block’ I’ve had for a while now. Sorry if this makes no sense at all.

Any advice?
Thanks!

BQ2: How would your main character act/feel in 90 degree heat?

GardenersCardiff answers:

Oh gosh, sometimes I get so anxious about all my stories that I get thinking, “Why can’t I write them all at the same time?!?!” But one of the things that helps me settle on one for a while is thinking, “Why would I want to do that? That would mean I’d finish them all that much sooner. I don’t want to leave these fantastic characters and the story! I’ve grown too attached.”

I’ve termed it “story-hopping” when I go back and forth between stories I’m working on. Honestly, I can’t decide what I want to write. I just write what I feel like writing most. Usually, that means I am working on one main story at a time. Now, I’m working on two. I’ve accepted that I can’t work on all the stories. I just tell myself they’re on the back-burner and I’ll get to them when I get to them. Story-hopping solves the boredom problem for me personally.

But if you really want to stick with one story at a time, here’s a couple things that might help:

–I hand-write parts of my stories, and when I type them up (or type it up & edit), I get to sort of re-experience writing those parts. That motivates me to write more. Sometimes just editing a random scene will help me get back into the story.

–Boredom often results from a lack of change. Do you have your stories completely or nearly completely planned out before you get writing? Maybe you should do lighter planning – get a skeleton of your ideas instead or something. Be a more write-as-you-go person. Or maybe tinker with what you already have. Add some twists. Allow a character to do opposite of what you’d planned. Some fresh ideas might give you some incentive to get writing.

–Recall why you started writing the story to begin with. Write a list of everything you love about your story.

Hope that helps 😀

BQ: what is your current writing project about?
–The one I just started is a fantasy about a kid who is taken advantage of to his advantage, ironically XD

BQ2: How would your main character act/feel in 90 degree heat?
–I imagine him saying, “Nuh-uh, this is not part of my job.” Haha, is it 90 there too? 😛
