Button mushrooms (agaricus campestrius) are one of the easiest to home grow mushrooms and probably the most common home grown mushroom.

To grow from spores is very complex, and contamination of the Petri dish is almost guaranteed if you dont have a sterile lab to start the spores in.

A better way is to mix a couple of Table spoons of Hydrogen Peroxide with a gallon of water. Put on a mask (cheap paper mask will do) to prevent the spread of contaminants from your breath. In a large pot mix equal portions of dry straw and either cow or horse manure. Horse manure is best. Cover with a couple of table spoons of Hydrogen Peroxide and water and Bring to a boil. Boil the mixture for 30 minutes. Drain the water and use your hands to squeeze the water out of the material. This is your growing medium.

Next, use clean HP / water solution to sterilize the inside of a gallon zip lock bag, a Zacto Knife, and wash a FRESH, fully grown button mushroom with the HP solution. Then using clean hands washed with the HP solution, slice off a very then layer of the top membrane directly over where the mushroom stemm jions the cap. Next cut a piece out of the center of the mushroom directly over the cap. And place the piece you cut from the mushroom into the sterile zip lock bag, add the sterile growing medium and seal the bag.

Date the bag and the name of the mushroom on the bag. Set it on the shelf in a dark closet where temperature will remain at 65 degrees until the bag is completely full of a white spongy looking mass. This will take from 30 to 90 days. The white fibourous material is the actual mushroom plant that grows under ground. This is called your innoculant because you will use it to innoculate your growing bed.

When your innoculant is ready, Make more sterile growing medium and place in trays. I like to use plastic dish pans. You want about 8 inches deep of growing medium. Open you innoculant and mix pieces of innoculant into your growing medium. Keep the medium in a cool humid place at about 65 degrees and occassionally sprinkle with water to keep the medium damp. In 30 days you should get your first mushrooms. They start slow at first and then many come up at once, then they slow down again. With hold water until the growing medium starts to dry, then soak and drain. In about thirty days you will get the second “flush”, it won’t be as many mushrooms as the first flush. You can keep repeating the procedure until the amount of mushrooms you get no longer make it worth the effort. At that time dump the medium in the garden, it is excellent compost by then.

Pick your best mushroom for use in the next batch. And repeat the procedure. I like to keep 4 trays going so I have mushrooms on hand continously. The four trays supply all my brothers and sisters and my family.
