Your Questions About Gardening

Jenny asks…

Can you give me some tips on how to grow your own food?

I live on an acre and have access to another half acre, I have recently lost my job here Ireland and I don’t have much prospects for the next year or two so I thought that instead of sitting on my arse feeling sorry for myself I thought i might as well try grow some food, do you know any good websites and books that could help me out

GardenersCardiff answers:

No websites, but I do have some suggestions.

You can grow potatoes in a “tube” of old tires. Doing it this way ensures that you will have fresh potatoes during the winter. Start with 1 tire and fill it with dirt. Put in one or two seed potatoes (not potatoes from the store – they are too prone to disease) in the tire. When the stalk gets to be high enough to reach over another tire, put another tire on the stack and fill it with dirt. Do this until the stack is as high as you are. At the end of the summer, turn the stack upside down and start harvesting potatoes from the bottom. The rest of the potatoes will continue to grow until you need them. Harvest them by removing a tire from the top of the stack and brushing the dirt off. The tires will act as an insulator throughout the winter and keep the potatoes from freezing.

Invest in a large canning pot, canning jars and possibly a pressure caner to prepare the vegetables from your garden. You will only have so much space in your freezer and that will fill up quickly.

Daniel asks…

Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines

Laura asks…

Can you grow your own fish food algae for bottom feeders?

I just bought a new bottom/algae eater fish and the tablets seem to work with minimal results. I once heard you can jump start algae growth by using small rocks from the tank and putting the rocks into a separate container to grow the algae. I am just curious how to start the growth so i can have natural algae growth.

GardenersCardiff answers:

Yes, you can grow algae for herbivorous fish, but you will have to grow a lot of algae to keep your fish fed. They can clean off a rock or branch in almost no time.

Just put rocks, pieces of driftwood, or other objects in water where they will get sunlight. When one is covered with algae, take it and put it in the aquarium with the algae eater. When the fish has cleaned most or all of the algae from the object, return it to the algae-growing tank. If you have enough objects growing algae, you can keep rotating them through your fish tank and back to the algae-farm tank, to provide a constant supply.
You should still supplement the algae with other sinking foods, because algae eaters do not eat a diet of pure algae– they also need some animal matter in their diet.
